Unity University holds the distinction of being the first private higher education institution in Ethiopia. Establishment and Early Beginnings as a Language School (1991)
Unity University was initially founded in 1991 as Unity Language School, focusing on language courses such as English, Arabic, Italian, and French. The year marked the start of the university’s journey, offering preparatory classes for the Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination (E.S.L.C.E) in various subjects.
Rapid Expansion and Development of Vocational Programs
Within three years, Unity Language School saw significant growth in both student enrollment and staff. The introduction of a Certificate Program in Basic Law in 1993 marked an expansion in course offerings. By 1994, this certificate program was upgraded to a Diploma level.
Opening of Adama Campus and Vocational Programs (1993-1997)
In 1993, Unity University opened a branch in Adama, Oromia Regional State. The campus now offers diverse programs such as MBA, BA, and BSc Degree Programs in Business and Computational Sciences, alongside vocational courses in Business Administration and Front Office Clerking.
Unity Law, Language, and Vocational Institute to Unity College (1997-1999)
In 1997, the institution was renamed Unity Law, Language and Vocational Institute to reflect its expanded academic offerings. The period from 1997 to 1999 saw the launch of Diploma Programs in Accounting, Marketing, Business, Personnel Administration, and Secretarial Science.
Introduction of Degree Programs and Becoming Unity University College (1999-2003)
In 1999, Unity College introduced its first undergraduate degree programs in Accounting, Management, and Economics. Subsequently, more programs followed, including Management Information Systems (MIS), Journalism and Communication, Law, Marketing Management, and Computer Technology. In August 2002, Unity College was officially renamed Unity University College, becoming Ethiopia’s first private University College.
New Program Launches and Distance Education (2003)
In 2003, Unity University College expanded further by introducing BSc Degree Programs in Architecture, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Mining, and Construction Technology Management. That same year, the College of Distance Education was established, offering programs in Accounting, Management, Marketing, and Business Administration at the diploma level.
Unity University’s Graduate Programs and Full University Status (2007-2008)
In 2007, Unity University introduced postgraduate programs in Business Administration and Development Economics. By June 2008, it became a fully accredited University, joining the MIDROC Technology Group companies in November of the same year. This partnership accelerated the university’s growth and led to new opportunities for expansion.
Leadership and Recent Developments (2008-2020)
As a member of the MIDROC Technology Group, Unity University experienced rapid expansion under the leadership of Dr. Arega Yirdaw, who served as both CEO of MIDROC TGC and President of Unity University. This phase continued until April 2020, when Dr. Yirdaw stepped down as CEO of TGC but continued his role as the President and CEO of Unity University.
