Details
Lake Chamo is one of the most beautiful and biologically rich lakes in Ethiopia, located in the southern part of the country near Arba Minch. Covering an area of about 317 square kilometers, Lake Chamo is part of the Rift Valley lakes system and sits just south of Lake Abaya, separated by a narrow ridge known as the “Bridge of God.”
The lake is famous for its abundant wildlife, including some of Africa’s largest Nile crocodiles, hippos, and a wide variety of bird species such as pelicans, storks, and African fish eagles. The northern shoreline, often called the “Crocodile Market,” is a popular spot where visitors can observe dozens of crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks.
Lake Chamo is a major attraction for boating, birdwatching, and fishing. The scenic backdrop of the Gamo Highlands and Nechisar National Park adds to its natural beauty, making it a top destination for travelers seeking adventure and unforgettable wildlife experiences in southern Ethiopia.
